Fahey colt on fire
PA News
Firebet completed a hat-trick for Richard Fahey in the valuable Blue Square Stakes (Heritage Handicap) at Newmarket under Paul Hanagan.
The three-year-old was sent off at 7-1 having scored on his first two starts for the Malton handler, and travelled nicely throughout the mile-and-a-quarter heat.
Hanagan began to ask his mount a question from the furlong marker, but he quickened smartly once meeting the rising ground and only had to be kept up to his work to beat Roman Republic by a length and three-quarters.
Fahey said: "He's only raced three times for us and has won each start. He's really progressed through handicaps and I may look at a Group Two at Maisons-Laffitte on July 22. He was very buzzy when he first came, but he's a lot more relaxed now."
Awzaan showed an electric turn of foot to annihilate his rivals in the European Breeders' Fund Conditions Stakes.
Mark Johnston's juvenile was settled off the pace, but Richard Hills began to make his move a furlong and a half out and the colt soon took a couple of lengths out of the field before being pushed out to score by five lengths.
Johnston said: "We've thought he was a nice horse for a long time, but we waited with him because he is by Alhaarth. At home he was going so well we decided to have a go.
"We were going to step up to seven furlongs, except this race provided an opportunity for Sheikh Hamdan to see him running. The first thing that comes into my head is the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood."
Spring Of Fame gave Godolphin and Frankie Dettori a double following Kite Wood with a determined display in the Portland Place Properties Conditions Stakes, getting home by three-quarters of a length in a tight finish.
A fine day for Dettori got even better in the closing Racing UK Sky 432 Handicap as he completed a treble on 8-1 chance Canadian Danehill.
