Brevity booked for better things
PA News
Brian Meehan has a Group One assignment in mind for Brevity after she prevailed in a tight finish to the European Breeders' Fund Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes at Salisbury.
Brevity lacked the Pattern form of Rimth and Margot Did with only a Ffos Las maiden to her name, but the extensive urgings of Martin Dwyer proved decisive in the closing stages as a nose and a neck divided the trio in a strong-looking renewal of the Listed race.
The hot favourite Margot Did had finished just ahead of Rimth when looking a rather unlucky runner-up in the Lowther at York but despite a clearer passage this time, the placings were reversed.
It is quite possible they will all be reunited in the Electrolux Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket on October 1.
"She's a lovely filly and she always looked good through the spring," said Meehan of his 10-1 success.
"She's in the Cheveley Park and we'll see what happens, talk to the owners and see if we can bring her back for that. She's a proper filly."
There were few signs of autumn's claws sinking in on a sweltering afternoon in deepest Wiltshire but there was a feeling Meehan cannot wait for the latter part of the season to begin.
He said: "I think the two-year-olds are definitely very special. I thought they were a good bunch last season but these ones are really doing well. We'll only find out next year, though."
Ryan Moore, sidelined for more than three weeks with a wrist injury, made his heavily-anticipated return by finishing fourth on Caraboss in division two EBF Quidhampton Maiden Fillies' Stakes.
